Enthusiastic passers-by are needed to come and cheer on historic vehicle convoys as they weave their way through the region’s streets, as part of two action-packed weekends of nostalgia at the Severn Valley Railway.
The convoys will take place on both days of the Railway’s two Step Back to the 1940s weekends, on 29th-30th June and 6th-7th July, during which the whole railway will be transported back in time to wartime Britain.
An array of historic cars, motorcycle outriders and military vehicles, carrying some very familiar faces – King George VI, Sir Winston Churchill and General Montgomery – will travel from Kidderminster station to Highley Station and organisers are inviting people to share in the patriotic spirit and greet the convoy en route.
Clare Gibbard, Severn Valley Railway’s marketing and communications manager, said: “With its sheer variety of period vehicles and famous faces from the past, the convoy should be a real sight to behold and we are hoping that people can join us and help to get into the spirit of things.
“If anyone has a flag, please do bring it and wave us on as we pass, give us a cheer or come and meet everyone when we stop at Bewdley along the way – we would love to see you.”
The convoy will leave Kidderminster Station at 11.40am on both days, heading down Comberton Hill and on to the Stourport Road towards The Black Boy pub at Bewdley, where it will stop from 12pm to 12.30pm for people to come and meet ‘Churchill’ and ‘Monty’ and soak up the wartime spirit.
It will then meander through Bewdley town centre and head out to Button Oak at 12.45pm, through Kinlet at 12.45pm before arriving to a rapturous reception at Highley Station just before 1pm.
Severn Valley Railway’s Step Back to the 1940s weekends are two of the most popular events in the attraction’s history and will see the Railway filled with a range of re-enactors, entertainers, displays, and live action alongside its intensive timetable of steam train services.
Key features include the much-anticipated ‘battle’ between allied troops and German soldiers, General Montgomery’s camp, firepower demonstration, Red Cross demonstration, period barber, replica 1940s home, wedding and an array of musicians and stalls.
Evening VE Day Celebration concerts will also take place on 29th June and 6th July, featuring a short firework display and a number of period acts.
Advance ticket bookings for the events are recommended. For more information, fare prices and bookings, visit www.svr.co.uk or call 01299 403816.
