Thousands of people are expected to head to Shrewsbury this September as the lively town sees the exciting return of the annual International Street Theatre Festival…
The unique event is now in its seventh year and has grown from initial audiences of 6000 people in 2005 to an audience of approximately 30,000 in 2011, with a higher level of visitors envisaged for this year’s event. Organisers are promising new street performers this year and the event is the perfect way for families to round off the school holidays in style between September 2nd and September 4th.
Held on four stage areas in and around the wonderful setting of the town centre, the event features performers from a worldwide roster selected by artistic director Bill Ferguson. Each of the circle arenas will host a variety of shows throughout the day – with every individual act promising guaranteed excitement, enjoyment and entertainment for spectators!
Mr Ferguson said one of the acts set to attract special attention in 2012 is street dancing star and America’s Got Talent semi-finalist Snap Boogie, who will fly into the UK especially for the festival. He went on to add that “The Shrewsbury International Street Festival is a family-friendly event and a chance for people of all ages to experience a wide variety of street theatre.”
“Performers from across the globe will appear on our four stages and around the town centre throughout the entire weekend. The festival’s excellent reputation among artists’ means there is always a wide variety to entertain our visitors year after year.”
The festival is free to attend and our programmes are complete with autograph slots this year, so that children – and also adults – can get their favourite acts to sign them before taking them home as a keepsake for the future.
Organisers believe the event has been a great and continued success due to its wide appeal for all ages and its location in the heart of Shrewsbury town centre.
He said: “This is the kind of entertainment that the whole family can enjoy and watch together, completely free of charge. It harks back to the very history of this town and we hope that it will be a fitting final fling for the summer holidays.”
Organisers are keen to involve local businesses and town traders in the event and sponsorship opportunities are still available for the 2012 event.
“The event is free to the public and although many of our artists come at no charge we do pay their travel expenses so donations of any amount are always welcome.”
