An award-winning Shropshire surveyors has been asked to explore the feasibility of converting redundant residential housing in Shrewsbury town centre into student accommodation.

Record number of students are planning to head to university after completing their A-Levels.

Towler Shaw Roberts, who have offices in Shrewsbury, Telford and Wolverhampton, have been asked to lend an expert hand to the possibility of developing a town centre building into a student accommodation complex.

Chris Hedley, a building surveyor for TSR, said he had been asked to advise on the feasibility of the project to serve University Centre Shrewsbury where undergraduate courses start this month.

"I provided some preliminary advice on the conversion of redundant upper storey residential accommodation in Shrewsbury town centre, which the freeholder was considering for refurbishment as student accommodation," said Mr Hedley.

"It's a nine-bed unit with communal kitchen, living and dining areas and the work involved for the conversion would be about £100,000.

"The benefit was that it would re-use previous residential space rather than the loss of commercial space."

Mr Hedley has also advised on the property condition of several student accommodation complexes in the South East of England totalling 1,200 bedrooms and approximately 120,000 square foot of space for investment purposes.

The student accommodation property market is growing with £3.3 billion invested in the first three months of 2015, which is almost double the amount invested in the sector for the whole of 2014.
