Crowd-pulling gourmet demonstrations by some of Shropshire’s top chefs will head a line-up of special attractions in Shrewsbury Market Hall as part of the town’s forthcoming food festival.

Alan Dann, of Henry Tudor House, Nigel Huxley, of Draper’s Hall, Paul Maders, of The Hayward at The Lion Hotel, and Masterchef the Professionals quarter-finalist Chris Conde, of The Inn at Grinshill, will be seen cooking live.

The market hall will be the official Fringe of the Shrewsbury Food Festival on June 29 and 30, hosting a variety of events including a restaurant safari, sausage and real burger trails, food tastings, competitions, live music, children’s activities and workshops.

“It’s so exciting for us that four of Shrewsbury’s most talented chefs have agreed to come and put on a gourmet spectacular in the middle of the bustling market hall,” said site facilities manager Kate Gittins.

“Members of the public will not only be able to watch their favourite chefs in action they’ll also get the chance to quiz them about ingredients, recipes, cooking tips and what it’s like to be a chef in an award-winning gourmet restaurant.

“All these chefs are decorated with at least two AA rosettes and Alan Dann has previously been awarded Michelin stars. The market also has its own pool of culinary and artisan food talent and they too will be taking part in the rolling programme of food demonstrations.”

These include the national award-winning chocolatier Julia Wenlock, of Toot Sweets, seafood expert Ian Cornall, of Barkworth’s Seafoods and Saint Pierre Oyster Bar, cordon-bleu trained chef Nadia Zaza of the market’s Middle Eastern restaurant Mirage and butcher-chef David Lumley, of William Dodd traditional butchers.

Mr Dann, executive chef at Henry Tudor House, said: “I’m very excited about appearing live at the market hall and to be taking part in the first ever Shrewsbury Food Festival. I always enjoy giving demonstrations and meeting local people who are as enthusiastic about fresh local produce as I am.”

Mr Huxley, chef-patron at Draper’s Hall, said: “This is a wonderful way to bring together the town’s restaurants and market hall in one celebration.”
