Staff at the Shropshire and Mid Wales Fertility Centre have said a big thank
you to Sarah and Steve Tidmarsh for their recent donation of £178. The couple raised the money by asking people who attended the 3rd Birthday Party of  their twins; Jack and Francesca to make donations to the Centre’s ‘Hope for Life Support Group’ instead of buying presents.  This is the second donation the couple have made to the support group. The first was after the twins christening in 2011 when they donated £1,500, again by asking for money instead of presents. Sarah and Steve, who are from the Telford area, went through seven cycles of IVF treatment before having the twins.

If you are having problems conceiving, you are not alone; infertility causes pain and anguish to hundreds of millions worldwide. Around one in six couples has difficulty conceiving, regardless of background and culture.  Infertility is often thought of as a female concern, but in a third of cases it is caused by male problems, such as a low sperm count.

Infertility is usually defined as the absence of conception after one year of unprotected intercourse. Without contraception, around 75% of couples conceive within 12 months and a further 10% may conceive in the subsequent year. After this time the conception rate is quite low and the 10-15% of couples who do not conceive within two years will usually seek specialist advice and treatment at a fertility centre.

There are many treatments available for infertility. These include; taking tablets to boost the chances of ovulation; Insemination of prepared sperm in to the uterus; In-Vitro Fertilisation- where eggs and sperm are mixed in the laboratory and Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection- a treatment for men with low sperm counts where individual sperm are injected into eggs.  We also offer egg sharing/donation and sperm sharing/donation.
The Shropshire & Mid-Wales Fertility Centre, based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, first opened in 1991 to offer specialist fertility care to patients from Shropshire, Mid-Wales and surrounding counties. Over the years the service has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most successful IVF centres in the country, delivering the full range of assisted conception treatments.
Treatment is available on the NHS if patients meet local criteria set by groups of GPs (known as ‘CCGs’) in England or by the Welsh NHS. For those who do not meet the NHS criteria, the Centre is able to offer private treatment.
