A Sister at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has returned from London for the second trip of a lifetime in the matter of just a few weeks after she judged at the Paralympics.
Mrs Cathy Briggs, a Sister in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at RSH and Staff Side Chair for the Royal College of Nursing, was a National Technical Official for Field Events during the London 2012 Olympics where she judged nine events, including Greg Rutherford’s gold in the Long Jump on Super Saturday.
And Cathy, who joined the Trust in December 2002, has since judged at the Paralympics which ended on Sunday night with a spectacular Closing Ceremony.
Cathy was on duty for 16 of the 18 field events, and judged at 15 of them during 10 days. She judged Club, Shot, Javelin, Discus and Long Jump.
Cathy said she was delighted to have not only judged at the Olympics in London, which she described as ‘the most wonderful time in my life’, but to have also been selected to judge at the Paralympics.
She said: “The days were long but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. This has been a fantastic opportunity and I am delighted to have been involved in the Paralympics which was my second once in a lifetime opportunity in the matter of a few weeks.
“Both the Olympics and the Paralympics really captivated the nation, creating an unbelievable atmosphere across Great Britain and really are both strong candidates for the greatest Games in living memory.
“Both showcased the wealth of athletic talent not just in Great Britain but around the world. I feel honoured and privileged to have been given the opportunity to judge at the highest level possible at both Games.”
Cathy will be back to grass roots this weekend judging at the English Schools Combined Events Competition in Bedford.
