A Shrewsbury charity will be hosting a coffee morning to raise much-needed funds to ensure they can continue to help people across the town.

The North Shrewsbury Friendly Neighbours, based in Castlefields, provide one-off, short-term or long-term support for elderly and vulnerable people who want to remain in their own homes.

Volunteers assist with basic tasks including shopping, collection of prescriptions and pensions, dog walking, support for carers, support during convalescence, and transport to appointments.

They can also help with form-filling or applying for blue badges and also offer befriending services if people just need somebody to talk to or have a cup of tea with.

The coffee morning will take place on October 11 at 11am at the Castlefields Community Hall and all are welcome to go along. There will be a raffle, a cake stall, and a sale of handicrafts.

Julie Thomas, co-ordinator of the NSFN, said: “We have a lot of volunteers who spend a lot of time making sure that everyone we work with is happy in their own home and can stay there with our help.

“Different people have different needs but many of the people we help need assistance with transport as they no longer drive or have never driven and feel they cannot walk as far now. We fundraise to cover expenses for our volunteers, the main one of which is petrol.

“We also raise money for our Friendship Circle which takes place twice a month and sees many of our clients meet together for an afternoon at the Castlefield’s Community Hall or take part in a day out organised by us.”
