See how a signal box works, witness restoration work in action and get on board a diesel train cab – all part of a special Peep Behind the Scenes day at the Severn Valley Railway.
SVR will be opening its engine shed doors for the much-anticipated event, on Saturday, 20th July, offering visitors the chance to see what goes on throughout the year to keep the attraction running.
Following a designated trail, visitors can get up close and personal with some of the railway’s inner workings which are normally closed to the public.
The chance to learn how a signal box works, pretend to be train driver in a diesel engine cab, get on board a GWR First Class Sleeper carriage, experience the maintenance and restoration works at the Carriage Works and Carriage Shed & Turntable are all on offer at Kidderminster.
Bewdley will be home to tours of the Paint Shop and Wagon Works, the chance to ride a special shuttle train on the Tenbury/Stourport branch line and the opportunity to see a large-scale restoration project – Locomotive No. 4150 – in its early stages.
The giant doors of the Engine Shed at Bridgnorth will be opened for visitors to get up close and personal with some of the restoration projects which are underway.
Now in its third year, the popular event, organised by the 4150 Locomotive Group, will raise money for the Locomotive No. 4150 restoration project.
SVR’s marketing and communications manager Clare Gibbard said it was the ideal opportunity to gain an insight into the usually unseen work going on at the popular attraction.
“This is a fascinating opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes at everything that goes on in the background at the SVR. There’ll be lots to see, do and learn about for people of all ages, and plenty of our staff and volunteers to tell you all about what you are seeing,” she explained.
The Railway will be fully open as usual, offering a full service of steam trains, six unique stations and The Engine House visitor centre with its range of hands-on exhibits, displays and an outdoor play area.
Normal rail fares will apply on the day, and Peep Behind the Scenes wristbands are £5 for adults and £3 concessions, and can be purchased on the day or beforehand by visiting www.svr.co.uk or calling 01299 403816.
As the SVR is a working railway, some facilities may be closed during the weekend for operational reasons.
