Almost 50 individuals and teams from across The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust have been honoured in the national NHS Heroes scheme.
The recognition scheme was launched last year to celebrate the daily efforts of staff covering everything that they do on a daily basis that really makes a difference for both our patients and colleagues.
In the first two rounds of NHS Heroes – launched last autumn and winter – a total of 105 teams and individuals were honoured for their efforts and presented with certificates.
Now a further 48 individuals and teams have been highlighted in the latest NHS Heroes scheme which ran over the spring.
Martin Beardwell, Acting Trust Chair, said: “Yet again we have seen a wide range of individuals and teams from many disciplines within the Trust nominated for their commitment, courage and daily efforts.
“These 48 teams and individuals are a shining example of how our staff truly do make a real difference, not only to our patients but also to their colleagues throughout the year.
“But they provide just a snapshot of the passion and commitment of the thousands of staff at the Trust who work in our hospitals and in the community, seeking every day to provide the best possible care for half a million people across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.
“I’d like to thank all of our staff for their efforts. They are all an inspiration.”
Staff were nominated by patients, other members of the public and colleagues for a wide range of reasons, with praise including a focus on high standards of care, excellent support for projects and strong leadership.
The nominations could be for anything that NHS staff do that really makes a difference to patients and ensures they receive not only the very best care, but also the best experience possible – from providing a hand to hold or shoulder to lean on, to the introduction of new programmes or services.
Many of those put forward for the latest NHS Heroes scheme received their first nomination under the initiative, but others received special certificates honouring their nomination for a second or third time.
Mr Beardwell personally presented certificates to a number of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) recipients in the wards and departments where they work on 5 July to mark the 65th birthday of the National Health Service.
Later in the day, Peter Herring, Chief Executive, presented some of the NHS Heroes based at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford with their certificates, again visiting them in their area of work.

Case studies – just a few of the nominated NHS Heroes include:
High Dependency Unit (HDU) staff at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital: A member of the public wrote: “A member of my family was admitted to the HDU following emergency surgery.  We have admiration for the level of care, compassion and dedication given to him during a difficult time. Everything was explained to us, nothing was too much trouble.  They all do amazing work.”

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) team at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford (Silver Award winners for their second nomination): A member of the public wrote: “I lost my dear wife suddenly to cancer.  The nurses and doctors who were on duty that day treated her and myself and our family with the utmost dignity and respect.  They made great efforts to ensure her passing was dignified and painless.”

The Urodynamics Team: A patient wrote: “The treatment I received from the team was excellent.  They were very professional, sensitive and most informative in the way they treated me as a patient.  They put me at ease and I felt very comfortable in what could have been rather embarrassing for me.  I feel they went that extra mile.”

Sandra Copson, Sister on the Intensive Therapy Unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (Gold Award winner for her third nomination): A member of the public wrote: “This lady did a fantastic job when my grandfather was taken very poorly.  Sandra went above and beyond her role to make it easier on my family. She is kind, caring and professional.  Sandra is an enormous credit to the Trust.”

Carol Van Der Westhuizen and Rachel Pearce, both Sisters on Ward 9 at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford: A member of the public wrote: “Carol and Rachel led by example and every member of her team day and night gave the highest medical consideration, respect, and support that anyone could wish for.  This made the serious situation easier for the family to live with.  The way my wife was cared for in every way was a credit and example to the hospital on how to treat patients as individuals, not just a hospital number.” Their nomination related to their Chairman’s Award in April.
