Leading Telford accountants Turas has called for a ‘Budget for small businesses’ next month.
Helen Columb, owner of Telford-based Turas, urged new Chancellor John Healey to reverse the trend of recent budgets and deliver meaningful support for owners of small businesses in his October 28 statement.
Helen said: “There are something like 5.6million businesses in this country employing between one and 50 people and all too often they have been forgotten about by the Government.
“In the last two years, policy changes have made it more expensive to hire people and stripped away many of the tax advantages that recognised the risks and responsibilities of being a business owner.
“I know these changes have left many questioning whether running a company is still worth it. Owners are delaying hiring decisions or avoiding recruitment altogether because the cost of taking someone on has risen so sharply.
“Directors are often the last to be paid, and many put thousands of pounds of their own money into keeping their businesses going. The small amount of tax efficiency they once had has been eroded.”
Helen says the October Budget is an opportunity to reverse the trend.
“We need a Budget that recognises the reality for small business owners. One that reduces the cost of employing staff, restores fair tax treatment for directors and gives local firms the confidence to grow.
“If the Government is serious about boosting productivity and supporting communities, this is where it must start.”
Turas, which is based in Hall Court in Telford Town Centre, started trading in 2013 as Columb & Gosling Accountants. It changed its name to Turas Accountants six years ago under Helen’s leadership.
