Shropshire’s over-75s ladies tennis team will play in the LTA Seniors County Cup national finals at Nottingham Tennis Centre later this month.

There’s more good news for Shropshire’s senior teams, too, with the county’s men’s over-70s side celebrating promotion to the second division as division three champions.

Teams from over-40s up to over-80s compete in the LTA Seniors County Cup each year, with the players selected by Shropshire always so proud to represent the county.

The county’s ladies over-75s team are now looking forward to playing Middlesex in the national final in their age group in Nottingham on Friday, October 23.

It follows another successful season for the team captained by Mig Jones and also including Tina Jones, Sue Newborough, Liz Boyle, Lesley Pugh and Chris Heighway.

They combined impressively to win division one as they qualified to play Middlesex, winners of the other age group at this level, to determine who will be overall national over-75s champions.

Fiona Jones, the LTA councillor for Shropshire, said: “It’s the second time the team will have played in a national final after also qualifying a couple of years ago, so it’s a tremendous achievement.

“Seniors tennis is a great place where people of all ages who are still playing and enjoying tennis can compete at the highest level against players from across the country.

“It’s what makes tennis such a great sport because it gives people an opportunity to play a sport for life.

“In terms of numbers, we are the second smallest of the land-based counties in the country, so it’s terrific that two of our teams have enjoyed such successful seasons, with our ladies over-75s side through to the national finals in their age group, and our men’s over-70s team enjoying a promotion season.”

Shropshire’s over-70s men’s team made sure of promotion from division three in the LTA Seniors County Cup with a 4-0 victory in their final match of the season away to Northumberland.

They also enjoyed good results during the season against Hereford & Worcester, North Wales and Norfolk, the second-placed team in their group.

Captained by Steve Corfield, the Shropshire over-70s team also includes Iain MacDonald, Mike Paul, Dennis Rhodes, Rob Rue and Seabury Salmon.

Tennis Shropshire chair Mark Wilson added: “We are very proud of our seniors teams and what they do. It shows we have a depth to both the skill and engagement level, and it’s great to see our teams continuing to do well across all age ranges.

“We are very lucky that we have players that are willing to dedicate their time, as well as their skills, to representing the county.

“We wish our ladies over-75s team well ahead of their national final in Nottingham this month and we also congratulate our men’s over-70s team on their promotion success.”
