Colleagues from Asda Shrewsbury visited the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital this week to present the Haematology Clinic with a special gift in celebration of their years serving the community.
Twenty one long-serving colleagues, who have amassed 457 years between them, were asked to re-launch the newly remodeled store in September and had their years of service rounded up by Asda to give as a £500 donation to a local good cause.
The O’Connor Haematology Unit was chosen as the recipient of Asda Shrewsbury’s donation for the care and support it provided to the store’s colleague Linda Price and her late husband. Since the passing of her husband, Linda with the backing of the store has been taking donations of refreshments for the clinic’s patients and their families in support of its staff.
Sarah Raven, community life champion at Asda Shrewsbury, said: “While re-launching the store was a big honour, being able to support Linda and the great work of the Haematology Unit means the even more to our long-serving colleagues.
“They’re so proud that their love for serving the community all these years has resulted in a wonderful group of community heroes receiving a helping hand with this donation.”
Julia Clarke, The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust’s Lead Director for Cancer Services, said: “We are very grateful for this generous donation from the staff at Asda. This wonderful facility is a testament to the tremendous fundraising support we get from groups and individuals from across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.”
The O’Connor Haematology Unit is part of the new £5 million Lingen Davies Centre, which was opened at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital this year. The building for cancer patients is based on two floors and includes a new reception area, an outpatient unit for haematology, head and neck, and oncology patients as well as the day unit for chemotherapy.
