A Shrewsbury College student has been named winner of the Welsh heat in the Dulux Decorator Centres’ 2013 Apprentice of the Year competition.

Alexandra Johnson, who is completing her Apprenticeship with Newmor Wallcoverings, claimed her place in the competition’s final after she demonstrated a range of skill sets including wallpapering, stencilling, waterborne glossing and special effects.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have come first. It’s amazing,” said Alexandra. “The competition was tough, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I’m sure the final will be just as challenging. I can’t wait.”

Shrewsbury College Painting & Decorating Lecturer, Barry Mason, added: “It’s great that Alexandra has got through to the final. Not only is this a tough competition where the applicant’s skills are truly tested, it’s a very professional and well-recognised competition within the industry.”

Fellow Shrewsbury College Painting & Decorating student, Sam Clorley, came second in the event.

The competition final will take place at Sandwell College next month. Alexandra will be up against nine other regional heat winners, and the highest runner up, all of whom will be competing for the Apprentice of the Year title, £1000 cash and a variety of prizes for their college.
