People will be able to get an exclusive look around a £500,000 respite centre for adults with autism – the first of its kind in Shropshire – before it opens its doors to the first clients.
The doors of Barra House in Wem, which is run by Shrewsbury-based Adelphi Care Services, will open for the special open day on February 28 from 10am to 2pm.
Barra House on Aston Road enables adults with the spectrum disorder to enjoy a rest whilst also giving their carers and families the chance to enjoy a break safe in the knowledge their loved one is in safe hands.
Joe Kwaterski, business development director at Adelphi Care Services, said:  “This is a huge milestone to reach for Adelphi but mainly for the people who are diagnosed with Autism across the region – it is a much needed facility and we are expecting a great response.
“People are expected to travel from all over to view the facility but what is vital for us is that the facilities and the people who use it and the staff who work there are a part of the community.”

Mr Kwaterski added: “Holding open days, such as the one later this month, gives people the chance to see what our facilities are about. It might be people with autism wanting to find out what provision is available or their families who want to see what respite may involve for their loved one.
“Barra House is a custom designed, purpose-built respite provision specifically created to meet the needs of those on the autistic spectrum.
“The building was designed by Munro Associates in Shrewsbury and we have also been assisted by the National Autistic Society.
“The property has two service-user bedrooms, a staff bedroom, an office and spacious living area for visitors to enjoy their respite period which could range from a day to a week. There really isn’t anything else like this in Shropshire and we are very proud to be able to provide such a service in a beautiful home environment.”
Adelphi’s pilot autism-specific service will be used to gain Autism Accreditation through the National Autistic Society over a three year period.
If successful the accreditation process will be rolled out to Adelphi Care Service’s other residential properties which are home to adults aged from 18 to 65 with Autism, Asperger’s, learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.
