Severnside Housing offers a host of ways to help people get online. One of their new ventures to make the digital world accessible to all is through the Two Fat Rascals Café in the Riverside Shopping Centre.
Karen Brunt, owner of Two Fat Rascals Café, welcomes Severnside’s digital team every Monday morning and provides tea and coffee for customers who come in to gain help and advice on using computers and the internet, or who want to get involved with Severnside’s Learn My Way digital programme.
Karen, who knows most of her customers by name, says the ethos behind the Two Fat Rascals Café is to provide a base for community activities and workshops. She believes everybody benefits from having access to the internet, not only because of claiming benefits, but as a way of keeping in touch using programme’s such as Skype and Facebook.
Employees of the Two Fat Rascals have also been helped by Severnside’s digital initiative and Online Learning Programme, allowing them to study and complete skills certificates in health and safety, food hygiene and cooking in a supported environment.
Sue Dell, Community Development Manager for Severnside Housing, said, “this is such a great space for us to use to connect with local people. Some days it can be really, really busy with people wanting to learn and get online. We’re here every Monday morning between 10am and 12pm if anyone would like to pop along and see us. You can just pop in to ask a question, or stay for as long as you need to. We have laptops and free internet for people to use.”
