Bosses at Shropshire’s largest taxi firm say they are “surprised” by a rise in the number of unemployed people in the county – as the firm continues its search for more drivers.

Recent figures showed that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Shropshire rose from 3,410 to 3,555 from June to July.

Cindy Wilday, director at Go Carz, said they were keen to help people who might be out of work to find a new career as a taxi driver.

The taxi firm has about 800 drivers operating across the Midlands, but more are needed to meet the growing demand for its service.

Cindy said: “When we saw the news that unemployment has risen in Shropshire over the past month we were surprised to be honest, as the general economic climate seems fairly positive.

“Our message to anyone who has recently found themselves out of work, or indeed if they have been struggling to find work for a period of time, please get in touch to see if we can help.

“Taxi driving can be a great career, giving you the flexibility to be your own boss and work the hours that fit in with your life.

“We are incredibly busy and need more drivers to cope with the demand, so we would be delighted to speak to anyone about the options available.”

Go Carz operates taxis across the county from its two bases in Shrewsbury and Telford, and has grown in recent years to become the biggest private hire firm in the Midlands.

Cindy said the firm worked hard to maintain a high level of professionalism, offering NVQ qualifications and full support to all drivers.

She said: “The majority of our current drivers have now passed the NVQ in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving, which goes beyond what they need to know for their licence, but we feel it is important to encourage our drivers to be as knowledgeable as possible.

“With the right support and attitude, taxi driving can be an enjoyable and successful career path, so anyone interested should get in touch and give it a go.”
