A Shropshire cyclist joined an Olympian on a 45-mile ‘Palace to Palace’ ride to raise money for The Prince’s Trust.
Ben Lawrence, of Shrewsbury, was among the hundreds of riders which left the grounds of 1000-year-old Warwick Castle on May 20 heading to Kenilworth Castle to raise funds for the charity, which helps to change young lives.
Ben, of county insurance company Beaumont Lawrence & Co, rode with a team from Birmingham Allianz Insurance, which is supporting the event.
He said: “I am an experienced cyclist and when the Birmingham team said they were looking for someone to lead them round I was happy to volunteer. I have a good working relationship with the Allianz so I was pleased to help them out with something I know about.
“I helped them with their training and gave advice on how to approach it, and of course I was with them along the way.”
Rebecca Romero, the ex-Olympic cyclist, was also riding for Team Allianz and Prince’s Trust patrons former rugby captain Martin Johnson, former international rugby player Leon Lloyd and former England footballer Dion Dublin also took part.
They joined up to 1,000 other cyclists all raising money to help change disadvantaged young lives in the West Midlands.
A spokesman for the Prince’s Trust said: “Around one in five young people in the UK are not in work, education or training. Youth unemployment costs the UK economy £10 million a day in lost productivity, while youth crime costs £1 billion every year.
“We address this by giving practical and financial support to the young people who need it most. We help develop key skills, confidence and motivation, enabling young people to move into work, education or training.”
