Shrewsbury sewers are being asked to take up their sewing machines for a challenge with a difference – to make dresses for girls around the world.
Dress a Girl Around the World is a global movement that aims to give every girl in the world at least one dress. It is being supported by Space to Sew in Shrewsbury, which held a week of events in May where visitors made dresses destined for girls around the world.
Made from cotton pillowcases or spare cotton fabric, they are quick and simple to make and go to girls who would otherwise never have a dress of their own.
Owner Domini Lucas said: “We want to teach as many people as possible how to sew these simple dresses. They’re great fun to make so we hope people are inspired to continue sewing them and passing the skills on to others until every girl around the world has one dress to call her own.”
We’ve included a guide to making these dresses so Severn Magazine readers can carry on making these dresses at home.
Happy Sewing!
