For many people now in their retired years the music that still plays in their memories is 'Trad Jazz'. During the 1950's and 1960's Jazz found a new popularity in the dance halls and theatres around the UK. Based on tunes written and played in 1920's New Orleans, USA, the music was energetic, bluesy, exciting and became hugely popular.
Jazz musicians playing this music became household names and 'Trad Jazz' hit the 'pop charts'. Louis Armstrong, Acker Bilk, Ken Colyer, Chris Barber, Kenny Ball, Humprhrey Lyttleton, all familiar names to those growing up in the 50's and 60's. Many have happy memories of those days and some met their future wife or husband at traditional jazz dances. This music has now been taken up by many much younger people as it is rhythmic and fun music to dance to. The Lindyhop dance style has now been rediscovered.
