Chris Quinn
Walker Theatre
Saturday 16th November
In Theatre we talk of triple threats meaning, they can sing, dance and act, The triple threat in music I know of no proper comparison. But if one was to apply the same one might say they can sing, play and write. Chris Quinn is the triple threat. Musically this man has given so much in music to the town of Shrewsbury and the utterly packed house were living testament. What a treat they had.
Chris alone on the stage, with just two guitars and a single chair, completely solo he filled the space with such note perfect, music, music with crystal clear clarity and how they loved it. Tripping between genres like a hummingbird picking its next flower, Chris proved to be not just a master of Folk, Blues and Gypsy Jazz but a relaxed master of his space. The crowd adored him. Some were new fans some were old fans some were family and by the end of the evening all were friends too.
Quinn coming from a background of folk has introduced so much to the town of Shrewsbury that to see him almost unplugged was a humbling experience. The genres he brought were Folk, British Folk, Gypsy Jazz, Delta blues and some of his own compositions. As a writer, Chris is proving a tour de force, as he has found great poetry in his lyrics.
On stage Chris is convivial, relaxed and humorous, but when it comes to his music, he’s a very serious fellow. Delightful to see and watch him create so many notes without his fingers spontaneously combusting. He has a dead eye for the right note and any bum notes tonight couldn’t even be counted one hand. There were none.
Shrewsbury people said to Chris tonight, yes you are great and yes, we love you, and how they showed him with ovations and calls for more. Chris very unassumingly took the accolades and left the stage with the audience still whooping and cheering.
Not only does he organise the incredibly popular Django Festival in the town, but he finds time to teach masterclasses online, and he also give residential courses where he teaches the proficient to become great. Not only does he do all that but spends winters abroad in Austria playing and taking his style all over the world.
Shrewsbury is a lucky town, drama is strong, music is strong, and the arts are prevalent and again, strong. But the skill of some Shrewsbury musicians is beyond compare. All of them extremely talented but beacons shine in this sea of excellence. I give Chris Quinn that accolade and understandably I think, if you were there you would be obliged to agree with this reviews rating.
This is a Five Star Review.
