A team of big-hearted binmen have donated a work bonus to the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a thank you for their lifesaving work.
The men from Veolia’s Oswestry depot could have kept the cash for themselves but have instead decided to donate £200 to the hospital. They decided on the charitable deed after a relative of one of the binmen had a premature baby and they all agreed that the hospital’s staff had done a marvellous job of caring for the family and nursing the baby to health.
In total, 26 members of staff contributed to the donation. One of them, Keith Richards, said: “We were delighted that our employer, Veolia has agreed for us to donate some of our bonus to the Shrewsbury Neonatal Unit. It’s a cause close to our heart.
“My cousin Stuart’s baby Sam was born very premature, he was only the size of a fist and it was touch and go whether he lived or died. The staff at the Neonatal Unit did a fantastic job and Sam has gone from strength to strength. He will be three years old in December.”
Sister Dianne Rogers, from the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, said: “We are very grateful for the donation. We are very lucky that we get a number of people choosing to raise money for us or make donations – it is always well received and we thank Veolia for their support.”
The staff were awarded their bonus for having no accidents or lost time injuries for six months. The men hope that their money will help many other families get off to a healthy, happy start.
