The Castlefields Christmas Cardboard Collection initiative, on Jan 5th was a major success with hundreds of people, including many family groups, bringing cardboard to the Precinct car park for recycling.
It felt like a real community event and congratulations must go to Judy Coleridge (see attachment) as the main coordinator. Also, many thanks to the many local people who came along to help (see attachment) and North Shrewsbury Friendly Neighbours who served as a collection point and distributed hundreds of leaflets.
The c25 large bags which were filled is evidence of the great concern people have to ensure that such waste is recycled but also shows the need for the kerbside collection service to be reinstated.
Although many remarked that they very much appreciated our project, virtually everyone remarked that the previous collection service by Shropshire Council/Veolia was sadly missed and were demanding that it return.
I too believe that regular kerbside collection should be reinstated and to that end I asked for a report from Larry Wolfe, the senior officer responsible at Shropshire Council.
This largely reinforced a report given in November which I can supply on request. The gist is that there are no immediate plans for reintroduction and the pilots involving ‘light’ card have failed. There is a commitment to review “bringing cardboard back into kerbside recycling but not combined with garden waste.” However, any scheme would be on a phased basis and would not start until “around 2014.”
