Gemma Almond Paralympic swimmer

Former Shrewsbury Sixth Form College student and proud Salopian, Gemma Almond, swam into the worldwide spotlight by competing for team GB in the Paralympic Games. Here, she describes her experience…

“Something I will never forget will be that of the roar I heard when I entered the poolside to compete. It made me feel so nervous and excited at once, but mostly excited! The home crowd support was amazing and really made it a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

“It was just fantastic that the status and popularity of the games were raised so high and I am extremely proud to have been a part of the 2012 Games. I trained incredibly hard, alongside studying at Swansea University as I wanted to do well in both my studies and my swimming. Getting up at 5am every morning made it tough, but really worth it.

“I will take every target, event and year as it comes, but will continue training in the hope of competing in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.”
