TEN OUT OF TEN FOR SHREWSBURY CARTOON FESTIVAL
The first exhibitions of the 2013 Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival are open in Theatre Severn’s Chapel Bar and upper floor gallery from Friday 22nd March.
Australian cartoonist Dean Alston has produced gags and strip cartoons for the Western Australian daily for nearly 30 years. A recent selection is on show in the Chapel Bar including an Aussie take on the British Royal Family. Dean said “It’s a fantastic festival and a big honour for me”. Dean will coming to Shrewsbury from 19th – 21st April to take part in the Festival.
Ten years of Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival is celebrated in the FCB Manby Bowdler Gallery on the theatre’s upper floor. Top Marks features different aspects of the festival including two six foot by eight foot cartoons, examples of the instant cartoons drawn on a different theme each year and gags from the themed exhibitions and trails. Exhibition organiser Bill McCabe said: “It has been a pleasure putting together this tenth birthday show which highlights just how much superb cartoon art and activity the festival has presented to the public over a decade”.
Both exhibitions are free to view during Theatre Severn opening hours until 15th June.
Shrewsbury is the longest running and currently is the only Cartoon Festival in the UK.
Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival main weekend of activity, Cartoonists Live, is 19th – 21st April with, this year, a full programme of events on both Saturday and Sunday.
