Wheels 2 Work scheme hires out smoothie bike

The award winning Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Wheels 2 Work scheme are now the proud custodians of a Smoothie Bike. The Smoothie Bike – a cycle that makes smoothies by pedal power – is available for hire by groups or organisations for events and fund raisers.

The Wheels 2 Work scheme lends pedal bikes, electric bike and mopeds to people who need transport to get started with work.  During the last twelve months the scheme has helped two hundred people with transport loans and the travel advice they need to take up a job opportunity or stay in work.  The Smoothie Bike can be ridden like a normal bike and has a liquidiser that can be fitted to the back when stationary.  Davina Allen, Coordinator of the scheme said: “We won’t be hiring it out for commuting but it’s a great crowd pleaser at events.  We hope the bike will help raise awareness of our scheme and sustainable transport, and allow local groups and organisations to borrow it for their own use.”

The Smoothie bike is on long term loan to the Wheels 2 Work scheme from Shropshire Council, and has already proved a great success going out to schools, village fetes and fundraisers around the county.

Wheels 2 Work have already taken their first booking for the bike, which will be on loan to Shropshire Fairtrade Coalition during Fairtrade Fortnight in February.  The Coalition will be using the bike to make Banana Smoothies and raise awareness of the difference Fairtrade can make to producers in developing countries.

Those interested in hiring the bike should contact Wheels 2 Work on 01743 237883 or email [email protected].   To find out more about Wheels 2 Work visit www.shropshire-rcc.org.uk/transport . Wheels 2 Work is a project of Shropshire RCC, a leading local charity that works with individuals and groups to improve quality of life in the county.
