Shropshire school girl celebrates England call up

For many athletes, the opportunity to represent their country is a distant dream but for one Shropshire school girl the dream has become reality.

Thomas Adams student, Aimee Cooper, has been selected to join England’s under 14 rounders squad and she joins a long list of pupils from the school to represent their country.

Aimee, 13, from Wem has been called up to the squad as a deep fielder, and will now train throughout the winter at weekends ready for next season.

She said: “It’s really exciting and I couldn’t believe it when I got the letter saying I had been chosen.

“Rounders is one of my favourite sports and I always look forward to the summer term when he we play it in PE.

“It will be really nice to meet other players from different schools and it would be great to go on from here and play for England regularly if I do well.”

Aimee is a keen sportswoman and already represents the region in tennis where she is currently the girls’ singles and mixed doubles champion.

As a successful county athlete, she is Shropshire schools under 13 champion in 100m and 200m, and broke the school record for both events last year.

Aimee is a member of the Thomas Adams netball, football and cross-country teams and is a major player in house sporting competitions.

Deputy Head, Julie McGurrin, said: “We are very proud of Aimee’s achievement and are sure she will be a fantastic ambassador for the school.

“She is a talented competitor in lots of sports and I’m sure this won’t be the last time she plays at a higher level.

“The experience of meeting up with a national squad will be hugely beneficial to her in many ways, and we wish her all the very best.”

Aimee’s national call up adds her to a long list of elite athletes past and present from Thomas Adams including national modern pentathlete Joe Evans, Tom Garbett, who competes in national events for the triathlon, Beth Ellis who fences for the England squad and Finn Adams who is a national level tennis player.
