Shropshire Disability Network-What happened recently that was different?

Shropshire Disability Network tell us their AGM held about 6 weeks ago in Shrewsbury was certainly different to those held in the past. AGM's are normally- full of reports, run of the mill stuff and so boring to many people that they don't attend unless they have a vested interest in taking up a key role or have another reason for attending!

Deputy Chairperson Ruby Hartshorn tells us what they did differently! By spending the absolute minimum time needed to cover reports & essential business including accepting the financial records they welcomed one “keynote” speaker namely Sue Bott CBE-Disability Rights UK but were first treated to a presentation & short film by SID (Shropshire Inclusive Dance)

Different it certainly was. “Inspiring” yes but really not the right word to convey how our guests made us feel! What a shame so many people missed it. Really the best description was in a tweet by an SDN member “Live performance from brilliant SID, A conversation in Dance between able and disabled folk”  It was just that.  Thank You SID & also to Jim Hawkins for taking photographs for us enabling our portfolio of quality pictures to expand.

Ruby continued -Then there was Sue Bott CBE with her Guide Dog Faith who had journeyed from London back to her home town of Shrewsbury to give a talk about her career path and how She came to be working for Disability Rights UK. Sue brought much humour into her talk and we thank her for speaking our language, showing great understanding for those with a disability & how they are being affected by the changes by Welfare Reforms. People can read her presentation in full by visiting our website or you could take a look at the reports in the November/December edition of “YourVoice” our on-line newsletter. SDN also have articles & blogs read onto “YouTube” so reaching the non reader & those with visual impairment. For those with no IT access or who can not use a computer for whatever reason they can request a copy to be sent to you via the post by calling 0778 085 229
