Shrewsbury College launches new restaurant and training facility at Gala dinner

The new restaurant at Shrewsbury College was given its official opening on Friday when 70 specially invited guests enjoyed a five course meal prepared and served by students.

Origins restaurant has been open since October but the event marked the official unveiling of the new commercial venture, now known as Origins featuring TASTE Kitchen.

Origins, forms part of a major £15million development at the London Road site and houses two industry-standard training kitchens, a production kitchen plus a new restaurant and bar, which deliver professional training in Catering and Hospitality.

The facility was officially unveiled by special guest speaker and former Catering and Hospitality student Hannah Nugent, Principal of Shrewsbury College, Steve Wain and Chair of the Governors, Iain Gilmour.

They joined other guests including the Mayor and Mayoress of Shrewsbury and Atcham, Councillor Jon Tandy and his wife Diane, business representatives and partners and friends of the College to enjoy a menu featuring local food and drink.

There was entertainment from College students and a charity auction raised more than £800 for the British Red Cross and Severn Hospice.

Guest speaker Mrs Nugent is now the general manager at Jamie Oliver’s Italian Restaurant in Birmingham. She unveiled the Origins plaque and shared her experiences saying: “When I was asked to speak tonight I agreed straight away- anything to be a part of the college I hold so dear again. I’m going to talk about how I got to where I am today and how this College helped me get there.

“I believe the reason I am where I am today is purely down to the lessons and people I have come across on the way. With hard work, determination, loyalty and willingness- the lessons which were all taught to me at the College - anyone can succeed.”

Performing Arts student and table magician Koebe (CORR) Matthews, 17, from Whitchurch entertained guests and there was also music from singers Charlie Dean, 20, from Shrewsbury, also studying Performing Arts and Edward Brown, 18, of Baschurch, a Music Technology student.

A grand charity auction raised £805 and prizes were generously donated by Cineworld Shrewsbury, Imagine Spa at The Shrewsbury Club, Salop Leisure, Shrewsbury Town Football Club, Jamie Oliver’s Italian Restaurant and HEART of ENGLAND fine foods and The College

In the run up to the event, Chris Bradley, chef and proprietor of Mr Underhills Michelin starred-restaurant in Ludlow, ran a master class with catering students at the College.

A group of Year 9 Priory School students also came to the training kitchens on Thursday for a session with chef lecturer Sean McNulty, who also directed College students on the night to prepare the Gala meal.

Principal of Shrewsbury College, Steve Wain, said: “The restaurant looked absolutely fantastic and feedback on the facilities, the standard of food and the performance of all of students – from the kitchens, to front of house, to those performing on the night, was that they were all excellent.

“It was very exciting to be able to officially open our fantastic industry standard facilities and we are very grateful to Hannah for coming back to share her success story with us, I said on the night I was in awe of her for being able to work with one of her heroes Jamie Oliver.”
