New lecturer at Shrewsbury university centre seeks graduate

A marketing expert who has become one of the first lecturers at Shrewsbury’s new university centre is expanding her business - by taking on a graduate.

Shari Thompson, of Montford Bridge, has worked in marketing for more than 14 years and established Green Jelly Marketing to help small businesses thrive.

She has now signed up to the Marches Graduates for Businesses scheme through Shropshire Council, and is offering a graduate the chance to join the business as an online marketing assistant.

Shari said: “The business is going really well and the scheme is a great way of giving a talented graduate the opportunity to get some valuable experience.

“Marketing is a very popular degree nowadays but there are fewer jobs than there are graduates, so I am keen to help someone make their first step on the career ladder.”

Shari is part of the new team of lecturers at University Centre Shrewsbury, which includes both academics and industry professionals.

University Centre Shrewsbury is being developed by the University of Chester and Shropshire Council, and the first postgraduate courses started this autumn.

Shari lectures in marketing skills on the Certificate in Management Studies course, which is designed to produce the senior managers of the future. Shari joins lead lecturer Dr Tom Williams on the course.

She said: “It’s fantastic to be involved with the new university centre and I’m delighted to be able to share my marketing knowledge with students.

“Having a new university presence in Shropshire will be hugely positive for the county as a whole, because a lot of students go elsewhere to continue their studies and never come back.

“That’s one of the reasons why I am keen to offer a graduate placement - it’s important that businesses in Shropshire provide opportunities for graduates so they don’t need to leave the county to get their careers started.”
