Henry Olonga guest speaker at club's sports dinner

Former Zimbabwe international Test cricketer Henry Olonga is heading to Shropshire as guest speaker at The Shrewsbury Club's second sports dinner next month.

Mr Olonga, 37, has quite a story to tell and he will be sharing it in the county on Friday, February 28.

Tickets priced £35 each or £350 for a table of 10 are selling fast, says Dave Courteen, managing director of The Shrewsbury Club, so early booking is recommended.
Mr Courteen said: "It will be our second sports dinner. Last year our guest speaker was Garry Richardson from BBC Five Live and Radio Four.

"It's great to get people who are well known in the sporting world to come and share their story.

"Henry Olonga obviously has an amazing story to tell, from being an international cricketer and helping Zimbabwe win their first ever Test match through to then having to go into hiding for a year because of the stand he took against the government there."

Mr Olonga is also an accomplished singer and Mr Courteen said The Shrewsbury Club were delighted to have arranged for him to visit Shrewsbury.

"The dinner we held last year went brilliantly," he added. "It was sold out and Garry Richardson was very entertaining.

"This will be quite different and this dinner is great as it's not just for sports people but it will also appeal to sporting widows because Henry has reinvented himself as a singer.

"He's got his own CDs out now and he's an amazing singer so even if you're not into your sport then you can come along and still be entertained."

Tickets are available from reception at The Shrewsbury Club or by calling (01743) 467755.
