FIFA Call On Footlights Dance School for Entertainment

Footlights Dance School, based at Mereside Community Centre in Shrewsbury, received a phone call people can only dream of this week.  The call was from the Football Association at Wembley asking if the local dance school could provide a dance troupe of 20 dancers or more to provide some sparkle at Thursday’s Women’s FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

The match between England v Ukraine women’s football teams is taking place at The New Meadow Stadium on Thursday 8th May and the teams will be fighting for a spot in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Michelle Handley, the dance school’s principal teacher received a phone call completely out of the blue last week.  “What a phone call to receive!” stated Michelle “I am still in shock, but absolutely delighted to have been asked and thrilled for all the children that will be taking part, what an opportunity for them.”

The dance troupe will perform at half time and will include boys and girls aged 9-13 who attend the Shrewsbury Funky Feet classes.  “The routine they will be performing is one that they absolutely love to dance and I cannot wait to see them WOW the crowd” said a very proud Michelle.

The televised event is sure to attract the crowds to watch the match and now they can clap along and enjoy being entertained by local children from a local dance school.

95 children from Footlights Dance School and local Shrewsbury schools also entertained at last weekend’s Shrewsbury Children’s Bookfest.  Michelle provided free dance workshops at several Shrewsbury schools and the children were invited to dress up and provide a flash mob for the crowds to Matilda’s “Revoltin Children”.  “The children were fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed having an opportunity to perform. They looked so happy!  It is great to have your children go to a dance school where the teacher is keen to ensure they experience as many performing opportunities as possible.” Said Emma Davies, whose two daughters attend Footlights Dance School.

“It has been a busy week” said Michelle who is also a mum of two, “school workshops, dance classes, Bookfest and now rehearsals for the FIFA World Cup Qualifier event, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Exams at the end of June next!”

If you are attending the Women’s World Cup Qualifier this Thursday, be sure to give a big cheer for the hard working Footlights Funky Feet dancers.
