Dyslexic business woman sheds light on her achievement

A Shropshire business woman, who discovered she was dyslexic at the age of 20, today urged others to follow their dream of running their own business.

Nicola Brown, who runs Shrewsbury based graphic design company In The Shed, said she hoped her story would help to dispel many of the myths surrounding dyslexia during Dyslexia Awareness Week.

Dyslexia Awareness Week 2013, which runs from Monday 14th October to Sunday 20th October 2013, is this year focused on highlighting some of the other challenges dyslexic people face including poor short term memory and poor organisational skills, as well as celebrating the strengths that dyslexia brings.

30 year old Nicola is now running a successful design company and said the confidence and skills she has gained since running her own business has helped her to learn new ways to face some of the challenges that her dyslexia presented.

Miss Brown, who lives in Dorrington said: “The control and flexibility of running my own business has considerably improved skills that I previously found difficult because of dyslexia.

“The pressures of conforming within an employed environment further highlighted for me some of the challenges that being dyslexic brings such as difficulty with time keeping, organisation and poor short term memory.”

The designer said she hoped others would realise that running their own business could help to overcome many difficulties they feel they currently experience in the workplace.

“Developing and being in control of my own systems has certainly improved my organisational skills and the importance of deadlines and managing client expectations has contributed to my improved timekeeping, areas of difficulty that many people don’t understand are experienced by dyslexics.

“I am passionate about helping people understand and think positively about dyslexia, which is just a different way of thinking.”
