College tutors and world record holders feature on popular TV show

Painting & Decorating tutors from Shrewsbury College who are previous Guinness World Record holders hit our TV screens last week, when they came to a families rescue on Channel 5’s, Cowboy Builders.

Richard Tart and Barry Mason were asked by Channel 5 producers to take part in the Leamington Spa based episode, which was this week named the programmes ‘biggest build to date’. Both tutors were previously regular decorators on ITV’s hit home style show, 60 minute makeover, as well as being Guinness World Record holders for the quickest wallpapering duo.

Painting & Decorating Tutor, Barry Mason, said: “It’s always a great opportunity and good fun to take part in projects like this. As Richard and I are professional decorators, I think it’s important that we continue to enhance our trade outside of our college work.

“Our students are always encouraged to take up extra curriculum activities,” he continued. “So for us, this is a case of ‘practise what we preach’, and I think the students respect us for it,”

For Richard and Barry, bringing their expert knowledge and professional experiences into the classroom also helps to enhance their students learning experience.

Richard Tart, Painting Technician at the College said: “I really enjoy working on these projects with Barry and it’s a great talking point for the students - who are always keen to hear all about it.”

The show was aired on Thursday 15 May at 8pm, and is available now on demand,
