Carers receive dementia care certificates

Coverage Care, Shropshire's largest independent care provider, recently celebrated as a number of its senior staff were presented with a prestigious qualification in Dementia Care.

The City & Guilds Level 3 certificate in Dementia Care was delivered by Shrewsbury-based SBC Training and is aimed at people in positions of responsibility who are able to provide specialist support to other team members.  Those from Coverage Care who have successfully completed the course were chosen because of their ability to act as a focal point in their individual care establishments, and cascade their knowledge throughout the organisation.

The course reflects the Government’s strategy in this area, “Living well with dementia”, which outlines that people with dementia, and their carers, need to be supported and cared for by a trained workforce equipped with the right knowledge, skills and understanding of Dementia to offer the best quality care and support.  At the heart of the qualification is a need for the carers to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the causes and experiences of dementia and to use this in their care planning with reference to nutrition, communication, inclusion, enabling rights and choices, and positive risk taking.

Over the six month duration of the course, the learners had to attend training sessions, but importantly were observed in their workplaces to demonstrate they were able to apply their learnings in a practical situation.

Speaking at the presentation of the certificates, David Coull, Chief Executive of Coverage Care Services, commented: “That so many of our senior carers have achieved this qualification demonstrates our commitment to providing the very best care and support for our residents with dementia.  We always strive to be at the forefront of new thinking and practice in this area and felt confident that by partnering with SBC Training we’d be fulfilling that.  I’d like to personally congratulate all those who have received certificates today.”

Alison Roberts from SBC Training, added: “SBC Training is one of a very few training providers in the area to offer this specialist City & Guilds course and we have been delighted to support Coverage Care as they further their expertise in this area.”

The carers who received their certificates were: Carolyn Jones, Christopher Bennett, Sandra Heath, Rachel Lewis, Sonia Furber, Jane Cooper, Stephanie Crane, Julie Jones, Lisa Borland, Samantha Khan, Colleen Potts, Susan Stewart, Michelle Welch, Helen Turner, Carol Taylor, Pamela Scarrott, and Howard Ryan.
