Art Jewellery designer sets up shop

An art jewellery designer has opened a shop in Shrewsbury Market Hall creating handmade original designs.

Crystal Clarke specialises in mixed media, silver and copper contemporary art and gemstone jewellery and also sells a large selection of loose beads, Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls.

Crystal developed a passion for art jewellery, fashion and textiles while studying for an art and design foundation diploma at art college. She worked in the fashion retail industry as a window dresser for a number of years but always dreamed of opening her own art jewellery design business.

Crystal, originally from Birmingham, launched Crystal Clarke Jewellery as an online business in April and then spent months looking for a suitable location to open a shop or market stall. She found her ideal spot at Shrewsbury Market Hall.

“The market has a great atmosphere and vibrancy and we love being based here. There’s a very strong community of artists, designers and craftspeople which makes it an inspiring place to work, “ she said.

All of Crystal’s designs bear her own hallmark and are individually made on the premises by her and her partner Stuart Slater. Stuart joined her in the business after discovering his ability for making jewellery following a life-changing motorcycle accident.

Under treatment for a year the former welder and fabricator turned his hand to making jewellery.

“I couldn’t sit at home doing nothing so began making pieces of jewellery. One thing led to another and I haven’t looked back. I’d never go back to the job I did for 30 years,” he said.
