The Wightman Theatre Company presents Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie

Tickets are now on sale for The Wightman Theatre Company’s forthcoming production of The Glass Menagerie.

The production is the first of three professional plays to be staged at the Shrewsbury based theatre between now and the end of June and runs from Saturday 21 to Saturday 28 April.

Written by Tennessee Williams and first premiered in 1944, The Glass Menagerie, which is set in pre-World War Two USA opens with Tom, the narrator and protagonist, recalling memories of his mother Amanda Wingfield and sister Laura.  Amanda, a faded Southern Belle, shares her dingy St. Louis, Missouri apartment with Tom, in his early twenties, and his slightly older sister.

She worries, especially about the future of her daughter, a young woman with a limp caused by a bout of polio and a nervous insecurity about the outside world. Tom works in a shoe warehouse doing his best to support the family and irritated by the banality and boredom of everyday life, spends much of his spare time going to the movies 'or so he says' at all hours of the night.

Laura’s crippling shyness has led her to spend much of the time polishing and arranging a collection of little glass animals. Obsessed with finding a ‘gentlemen caller’ and eventual husband for Laura, Amanda enlists Tom’s help. But will the long-awaited caller fulfil or shatter the family's delicate dreams?
