Entries for hospital-to-hospital charity walk top 300

More than 300 people have signed up for a hospital-to-hospital charity walk with just a few weeks to go until the big day.

Nick Holding, an Improvement Manager at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said he was overwhelmed with the support for the From Here to Maternity walk which will take place on Friday 10 May.

He said: “To have more than 300 people taking part on the day is tremendous and it promises to be a really great event for a fantastic cause.”

A total of 302 people have now signed up for the walk which will see entrants walking from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) to the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford.

The walk will support the Caring for our Future appeal launched by Telford & Wrekin Mayor Councillor Kevin Guy last year. The appeal is raising money for a fun, learning environment, and hi- tech facilities at the new Women and Children's Unit which will open at PRH in summer 2014. The appeal is focusing on the creation of a garden room that will link the children's inpatient services to the outside space for children, young people and their families.

Nick said he hopes to create a real “buzz” around the two sites on the day to help everyone get into the spirit of the occasion, even if they are not taking part in the walk, as other events such as cake sales will be taking place on the day.

“It should be an excellent day and, of course, as well as having fun the entrants will be helping us to raise money for a cause that will benefit our patients,” he added.

The event follows The Great Walk to Work which Nick organised last year. It was held in May and raised just under £10,000 for the Lingen Davies appeal to buy furniture for the Lingen Davies Centre at RSH – double the fundraising target – with entrants walking from PRH to RSH.

As with last year’s event, From Here to Maternity is free to take part in, and people are asked to raise what they can for the appeal.
