A POWYS and Shropshire Accountant has launched an usual new blog in which he shares his opinions, reviews and concerns on all things tax and also snacks.
Robert Ellis, 37, was born and educated in Shropshire and lived in Powys until he was 18. But having recently moved back to the area from Devon, he has been making an effort to connect with as many local businesses as possible, and find and celebrate the best local businesses have to offer.
Rob, who is married and now lives in Llanfechain with his wife Jo, said: “I grew up in Llanfechain and went to school in Oswestry and Shrewsbury, so I have fond memories of being out and about in the area and enjoying delights like eating Sidoli’s cakes with my parents and enjoying the great local cheeses.
“But having lived in Devon and Somerset for the last ten years and being slightly out of the loop and with Jo never having been to the area before we decided it would be nice to explore things together.
“Jo runs a PR and marketing firm, Jolly Good Causes, and we were talking about how I could make accountancy more approachable and handy for small firms, like local farmers and electricians, who barely have the time to stop for lunch let alone sit down with an accountant.
“She suggested we should be taking the business to them. She said I needed a fish and chip or burger van, where I could sit down with new clients for a quick chat and a fast but decent lunch – and she joked we should call it Tax and Snacks.”
The Tax and Snacks food van has not become a reality, but the concept has inspired a new blog which will explore issues of accountancy and tax but also celebrate all the best of local food and drink and businesses that are getting it right.
Rob said: “I love eating out locally, buying meat from my local butcher in Llanfyllin, which is high quality, and encouraging people to enjoy local businesses rather than national restaurant chains.
“Anywhere I eat, from burger vans and pubs to high end restaurants and hotels, I will review honestly and comment not only on food and service but also the value for money and you will be able to read about it on the blog on my website.”
Rob’s first tax and snacks blog, entitled ‘On Tax and Tapas’ has been written following a visit with friends to The Olive Tree in Frankwell Island, Shrewsbury.
Now he is asking local people and businesses to come forward and suggest places for him to eat and food and other products and ingredients for him to review from the local area.
He is also happy to hear from potential new clients, who would like to sit down with him over a drink and snack and see how he can help their business.
Rob said: “A lot of people are critical of restaurant and food reviews because they think they are not honest, but I will always pay for whatever I eat and drink so I can share my honest opinion and as with The Olive Tree the restaurants will not know I am writing a review so will treat me like just another customer.”
“I am looking to celebrate and promote the best in good in local food and drink but if I find things which are disappointing, I will tell the truth and be fair about it.
“I will also be adding a review section to my own website so clients can review Welch and Ellis honestly, and we promise to share all reviews, good or otherwise.”
