5 films from 5 countries across 5 decades

A popular film group has recently unveiled an exciting addition to its regular programme of fortnightly cinema screenings at the Hive Music and Media Centre in the town. Shrewsbury Film Society is bringing a mini-season of films to the Shropshire venue, delivering five films from five countries, spanning across five decades.

Film enthusiasts across the region are encouraged to come and view the five great dramas on the big screen with the added benefit of full surround-sound. Organisers from the Film Society say they have specifically selected the five classic films from some of Europe's best directors. From the determined climb to the top, of a German war bride - to a gripping thriller set in Mussolini's Italy and the struggles of a novice in post-war Spain, there really is something that will be of interest to all cinematic tastes.

The mini-season will commence on Saturday February 2 with 1950s Polish film Kanal. This will be followed by the film Viridiana which explores 1960s Spain and this will be screened on February 23. On Saturday March 2 people can see The Conformist, which is claimed to be the finest film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. The mini-season will continue with 1980s german classic, The Marriage of Maria Braun on March 16 - and will end in 1990s France, with A Tale of Autumn. This final film will be screened on Saturday March 23.

Habib Malik-Mansell, spokesman for the Hive said "The Shrewsbury Film Society continues to develop from strength to strength as the months go by - particularly with the introduction of surround-sound to the venue, thanks to Shropshire Council LJC funding." He added "This mini-season of films is a great addition to the Hive's spring programme of cultural events and I hope people will support the Film Society and discover the valuable experience of affordable cinema which it brings to the community."

All films start at 8pm with doors and bar opening at 7:30pm. Tickets for the films are £5 per film on the door - and a mini-season ticket can also be purchased for £20 in advance. For more information visit http://www.hiveonline.org.uk/shrewsburyfilmsociety/
