Shrewsbury furniture store bosses back return of annual town regatta

Bosses at Shropshire’s largest independent furniture store have backed the return of the county regatta by helping to sponsor the popular rowing event after last year’s event was called off due to floods.

Alan Ward will be giving its support to the Shrewsbury Regatta for the first time.

And organisers are hoping it will help to make the Shrewsbury event on May 11 and 12 even more successful in 2013 after they were forced to call it off last year because of flooding.

Kathy Lesser, marketing manager at Alan Ward, said: “We are delighted to be involved with such an important event for the town which attracts more than 3,000 people.

“It did not take us long to decide to sponsor the regatta, which is one of the largest in the country, and we are really pleased to be able to help in this way.

“The regatta really adds extra atmosphere to Shrewsbury over that weekend. It also gives the town and surrounding areas a chance to showcase to visitors what else they have to offer and hopefully to drum up a lot more trade.

“We hope that people will come and see the racing and soak up the atmosphere in one of the most beautiful settings the county has to offer. It promises to be very exciting event this year.”

She said Alan Ward, which boasts its flagship store on Ennerdale Road in Shrewsbury, was donating a designer outdoor dining set, part of its new collection, complete with parasol and seat pads which would be the main raffle prize for the event.

The annual regatta takes place on the River Severn at Pengwern Boat Club on with racing from 8.30am to 6pm both days.

Organisers are aiming to make this year’s event the largest in its history spanning more than 100 years and to build on the outstanding success of GB Rowing in the 2012 London Olympics.

Bob Saunders, chairman of the Regatta organising committee, said: “We are very pleased that Alan Ward has joined us as a sponsor.

“It is a big event for the club every year with a lot of people from both the local region and further afield coming along to make use of our beautiful river.

He said: “The regatta is an important event for the county and sponsorship from companies like Alan Ward is really vital to help with its continued success.

“We are very grateful for the support of the business and encourage everybody to come down to watch the event and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere.”

Food and drink will also be available from the clubhouse. For more information go to
