Upcoming Sporting Events in Shrewsbury for 2023

Sport is something that runs deep through the town of Shrewsbury, whether it’s in the support of its historic football club, the grassroots rugby union, the wealth of athletics events, or the many dedicated sports facilities in and around the area.

There’s something for everyone here and in some ways there’s almost too much choice, so to help we’ve listed out some of the top upcoming sporting events for 2023 that are sure to pique the interest of Shrewsbury’s citizens.

Football and rugby union

Football fans have the legendary Shrewsbury Town to follow of course, as the side continues its push for promotion from League One. If you’ve yet to get involved, there’s still the roster of remaining fixtures through to May for you to enjoy as we head into the second half of the season.

If rugby union is more your thing though, there’s also Shrewsbury Rugby Club whose first team still have fixtures to play in the Counties 1: Midlands West (North). The club also has opportunities for juniors to get involved and sign up from U6s to U18s.

Athletics

Alongside regular Park Runs in the town, the first major running event is happening on March 12th – specifically the Wace Morgan Shrewsbury 10k. Open to runners of all abilities (although there are some hill climbs within the course), it’s a great means of running for charity or to simply try and beat your own personal best time.

In a similar vein, if we look ahead to September 3rd, the 12th annual Shrewsbury Triathlon is taking place. This is again something open to a variety of abilities as the race can be adapted to make it more family friendly if you wish. At the same time, those looking to push themselves can upgrade this to a Quadrathlon.

Motorsport

Fans of racing will be able to make the most of the regular Loton Park Speed Hill Climb, just outside the town. Starting in March, there are hill climbs every few weeks until September run by the Hagley & District Light Car Club. Tickets for these can be bought in advance and for those of you looking to enter a race, entries for the Championship are now open.

Events

Any fans in the town of NFL should definitely considering heading down to Hickory’s as this popular smokehouse will be showing the Super Bowl on the 12th of February from 10pm until late. However, it will be a very late one, so you might want to think about booking the following Monday off work.
