Tennis Shropshire’s County Championships enjoys successful return

The return of Tennis Shropshire’s County Championships proved a huge success after players of all ages took part in the popular event.

Around 150 tennis players from around the county entered the County Championships at The Shrewsbury Club as the event returned for the first time since 2019.

Last year’s event was cancelled owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Simon Jones, the chair of Tennis Shropshire, said: “It was wonderful to see the event going ahead again for the first time in two years.

“We didn’t quite reach the number of entries that we had in 2019, but there was still a good entry of about 150 players, which was pleasing.

“A few years ago we set about making the County Championships a real festival of tennis and that’s what we have achieved.

“The way all the matches were played throughout the week, the spirit and the atmosphere around the event, was just fantastic.

“We have had so much positive feedback from those who took part.

"People were really pleased to see the event going ahead and the atmosphere, not just among those playing, but those watching, the parents of participating players, was great to see.”

The County Championships featured singles events for boys and girls in a number of age ranges - eight and under, nine and under, 10 and under, 11 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under.

Doubles competitions were also be played for under 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s.

Adults also had the chance to get involved with the tournament with singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions held.

Tennis Shropshire chair Simon added: “Thank you to The Shrewsbury Club and their staff for once again hosting the event.

“A huge thank you to Simon Haddleton, the tournament referee, along with Amy Dannatt, as they did a wonderful job in ensuring everything went so well throughout the week.

“We are so blessed to have them in the county and the hours they put in to make the event a success was phenomenal.”

Attention now turns to The Battle of Shropshire, a team event which was held for the first time last year, which will be held at The Shrewsbury Club between September 25 and October 3.

Players of all ages keen to take part are welcome to register their interest by emailing Simon Haddleton at [email protected]
