Shropshire Disability Network takes its first meeting of 2015 to Oswestry

SDN Management Committee are looking forward to welcoming many people at their meeting on Thursday 12th March 10.30 am refreshments for 11 am start at Oswestry Cricket Club, Morda Road, Oswestry. SY11 2AY

“Our last meeting at Telford in December was very well attended, now back in Oswestry after 12 months we are hoping to have a full house” said Ruby Deputy Chairperson. She continued “As well as hearing about our work of the last three months we are pleased to have two guest speakers who we hope will inform, enthuse and inspire. At all our meetings with have two signers enabling those with hearing impairment to take part. If you have not been to one of our meetings before, a warm welcome awaits”

Our guest speakers are:

Mark Allan-Technical Director from Orthoplastics Limited in Lancashire will talk about there work making artificial joints for the medical profession. Orthoplastics is one of only 3 places in the UK that makes artificial joints. Mark said “I had to postpone coming to your meeting in Shrewsbury last September but I am so looking forward to coming back to my home county to talk to your members”

Jo Allmond, mother of Jess will be our second speaker & will tell us about their book “Jess the Goth Fairy” which is based on Jess’s childhood drawings. The book highlights how people with a disability can achieve great things if given the right support. Jess has learning & physical disabilities & tells her story. Jo said “Unfortunately Jess can not be with me, so I am a little nervous going solo but I am really looking forward to engaging & meeting all your members. There will be opportunity to buy copies of our books”

During the meeting there will be networking opportunities. Penny Rice from Oswestry Equality Group will be available to talk with people about their work & will have leaflets available including their programme for the year.

We also look forward to having Jessica Lightwood with us. She was recently appointed Sports Inclusion Officer for Shropshire so there will be opportunity to talk to her.

Prior to our meeting closing, we have a raffle with many prizes to be won. SDN would like to thank local businesses for their kind offer of prizes. All monies raised goes towards meeting costs ie venue, refreshments etc
