Shrewsbury students prepare to wow audiences with their musical talents as part of annual Leavers’ Concert

Next week A Level students from Shrewsbury Colleges Group will be showcasing their musical talents for as they reach their final few months of College.

The annual Leavers’ Concert will be held at the English Bridge Campus on May 9. The event is one ‘last hurrah’ for the musical second year students to showcase their talents and play with the College bands.

There will be an eclectic mix of music from several different College ensembles including the jazz band, string orchestra, concert band and choir. More than 70 students will be taking part from the first and second year. Between them they will play film music, jazz standards, classical favourites and some popular hits that everyone will recognise. The song list for the evening includes well-known tunes such as Let it Be, Over the Rainbow, Spring from the Four Seasons, Cry Me a River and many more.

Two different student groups will also be performing for the audience. ‘Effervescent’, a contemporary trio and ‘Nadir’, a metal band, will be showcasing their latest tracks, which are available to listen to on various music platforms.

Oliver Turner, 19, from Craven Arms said: “For the Leavers’ Concert I will be in the jazz band, choir and concert band. I decided to come to Shrewsbury Colleges Group after I saw their performance of Cabaret in 2015, I thought it was brilliant. So it is great to now be a part of the College shows.

“I am doing a degree at Aberystwyth University after college and, thanks to the teacher’s encouragement here, will continue to take part in musical enrichment activities.”

Chris Lewis, Music Teacher, said: “The Leavers' Concert is always a special event as it’s the final opportunity for our second year students to perform with their fellow college musicians before they all go their separate ways. It's a great shared experience and the stuff that happy memories are made of, long after coursework and exams have been forgotten. I wish all the leavers well and hope that music continues to be a part of their lives for many years to come.”

The show will be held in the Wakeman Hall on May 9 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available online at the College Box Office or by calling 01743 235491 and cost £5.
