Charity organisation and venue, the Hive in Shrewsbury is launching its friendly and relaxed cinema season suitable for people with dementia and others on Wednesday 12th October with the classic musical, Singin in the rain.
Unlike traditional cinema screenings, these will have soft lighting and lower volume to bring comfort to those with dementia and other illnesses. Tickets for these screenings cost £6 per person and concessions are £4
Projects & Programmes Manager, Emma Croall said: “Thanks to funding we’ve been awarded by Film Hub North West, we have started to programme relaxed daytime film screenings. ”
As an organisation the Hive aims to provide creative and exciting opportunities for all members of society and a study conducted by the Alzheimers Society concluded that there are over 800,000 people in the UK with dementia, many who rely on help from family, friends and carers on a daily basis.
The Hive hopes these screenings will offer an opportunity for people to come together in a comfortable and safe surrounding and enjoy classic films where they have the unique opportunity to ask for lights and sound to be adjusted to suit their needs.
Emma Croall added: “We are looking forward to providing an opportunity for people to not only enjoy a film but also to relax and chat to others afterwards over a cup of tea. People are more than welcome to suggest films to us. Our next one will be ‘West Side Story, on 23 November, and ‘Mrs Miniver’ on 9 December.”
