Group Aids Midlands Air Ambulance Charity

A Shropshire business networking group has stepped in to aid the Midlands

Air Ambulance Charity to the tune of £1,500 after an annual Christmas fundraising event had to be cancelled.

For the past five years the charity has held a week-long Christmas gift wrapping service at Telford Shopping Centre but this year it had to be cancelled after a date change left it short of volunteers.

When the Shrewsbury-based Severn Business Network found out about the cancellation its members decided to step in with the cash donation to make up for the shortfall in funding.

“This year the charity had difficulty getting enough volunteers to carry out the usual gift wrapping service, an annual event that normally raises £1,200 for the Midlands Air Ambulance service,” said networking group spokesman Andy Lawrence.

“The charity’s fundraising manager is a member of our group and we didn’t want the charity to lose out on much-needed funds, so we decided to step in and donate £1,500 to ensure the charity, that carries out such a vital life-saving role, wasn’t left out of pocket.”

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity fundraising manager Maria Jones said: “The gift wrapping service is one of the annual Christmas fundraising events that we do. We had to cancel it this year because, for the first time in five years, we didn’t have enough volunteers.

“It was due to start on December 3 and run for a week at Telford Shopping Centre. We feel overwhelmed by the generosity of the Severn Business Network. They already do a lot of fundraising for us, so we feel really touched by this additional surprise donation.”

Midlands Air Ambulance is the charity responsible for funding and operating three strategically located air ambulances serving six counties in the Midlands, including Shropshire.

The service needs to raise £7 million every year to remain operational. It receives no government or National Lottery funding so relies entirely on generating donations from businesses, groups and the general public.

Severn Business Network is based at Shrewsbury Town FC’s Greenhouse Meadow stadium. It meets very Thursday morning from 6.45am and has nearly 40 members.
