Free blood pressure checks thanks to Rotary

Rotary Club of Shrewsbury offers Free Blood Pressure tests

There will be an opportunity to get a free blood pressure check during the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital's Fun Day on Saturday 6 July 2019 thanks to the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury.

The checks will be available within the Hamar Centre at the hospital and Rotary Club stewards will be circulating to make sure everyone is aware of the free service, offered on a walk-in basis - no appointments needed. The blood pressure tests will be carried out by qualified nurses and participants will be given a report and, if appropriate, advice to follow up with either an urgent or routine visit to their own doctor.

A similar Health Awareness event held recently in Bridgnorth led to one participant there receiving life-saving treatment. The lady concerned, a visitor from Cheltenham, spoke to a member of the Rotary Club who invited her to take the test at a Health Awareness Day being held in the library. She said her results were 'off the chart' and, despite feeling fine, she was sent for more comprehensive tests during which she was told that taking the initial test had probably saved her life. Later she told the Shropshire Star: "I would like to thank the Rotary Clubs for giving up their time and for their dedication to helping others."

Co-ordinator of the Shrewsbury event at the RSH Fun Day, Rotarian Alan Wilding, a past president of the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury, said: "We're told by the Stroke Association that high blood pressure contributes to more than 50% of strokes and can affect anyone at any age. The lady who took a test in Bridgnorth recently was very grateful that she found out about her high readings in time to get treatment.

"Our Health Awareness event at the RHS Fun Day continues our annual programme of offering free tests in order to help everyone find out if they at risk. The test is simple and quick and we are a very friendly team."

The Health Awareness blood pressure checks will be available free of charge at the Fun Day from 10am - 4pm.
