First wine of the year launched at award-winning Hencote

An award-winning Shropshire vineyard will launch its first new wine of the year later this month — with a special wine pairing and tasting menu evening.

The Hencote Estate in Shrewsbury is unveiling its 2021 Vivienne white wine on April 29 at an evening which will combine fine wines with fabulous food.

A special five-course menu has been prepared, which will pair four vintages of the Vivienne wine produced since 2017 with specially-created dishes designed to complement them perfectly.

Hencote general manager Mark Stevens said the evening would showcase the new vintage and its predecessors alongside the talents of Hencote head chef Phil Lye.

“Phil and our winemaker Gavin Patterson have curated a special tasting menu that shows the breadth and versatility of our Vivienne wines, from our inaugural harvest of 2017 up to our most recent in Autumn of last year.

“Whether shellfish, poultry, white fish or vegetarian, every dish has been carefully curated to pair alongside our wines to produce an amazing food and wine experience.”

The new 2021 vintage will be paired with a dish of scallop, yuzu, sesame and chicory, while other vintages will accompany courses of curried leeks, bass with pomme anna, samphire and white wine butter and chicken with a celeriac broth and wild mushroom.

The fifth course, a chocolate cremeux dessert, will be paired with Gavin’s private label fortified wine.

Mark will be on hand to discuss each vintage as wines are brought to the table and explain Hencote’s philosophy in producing wines that reflect the individuality of each season whilst retaining their award-winning consistency.

“It promises to be a really enjoyable evening which will transport you across the history of Hencote’s vintages whilst enjoying a unique culinary experience,” added Mark.

“Our doors open on the 29th at 5pm with the evening's first course served at 7pm. Please join us early for a drink in the lounge, to take in the sunset and make the most of your experience.

Reservations for the evening — which costs £95 — are available here and menus can be viewed at https://www.hencote.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Vivienne-Wine-Launch-...

Hencote created history last year after winning a second gold medal for red wine at the world’s most prestigious wine competition.

The vineyard struck gold with its Mark I 2018 wine at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) becoming the first in the UK to have won gold for two different still red wines, having previously picked up the award for its 2018 Amphora Pinot Noir in 2020.
