Famous Musical Role Up For Grabs

A role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg is the outstanding goal awaiting a local actress in an upcoming musical.

For Shrewsbury Musical Theatre Company is about to cast for Ghost The Musical which will be performed at Shrewsbury Severn Theatre 20-22 October 2022.

Company spokesperson Jayne Garner said today the rights holders are ‘very specific’ about who is cast for the role of Oda Mae Brown which was made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in the original film with Patrick Swayze.

Specifically, that Oda Mae Brown, a black female, is a larger-than- life character, con artist with a heart of gold.

Afro-American can really be any age as long as older than characters Sam and Molly. The plot centres on Sam and Molly who are attacked as they are returning to their apartment.

Oda Mae Brown comes from a family of people who had the psychic ‘gift’ but never had it herself. That was until Sam turns up, so she doesn’t really know how to handle the situation.

Said Jayne: “She needs to be a good strong character actress age 30 to 65 possessing a mezzo soprano vocal range.”

Anyone interested in auditioning for the role should contact SMTC via their social media or email [email protected].

Ghost The Musical is a musical with book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin and music and lyrics by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard.

Based on the hit 1990 romantic fantasy thriller film of the same name, the musical had its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House in March 2011. Ghost then began its West End premiere in summer 2011, opening on July 19.

A Broadway transfer opened in April 2012 and toured the UK in 2013 after the London production closed in October 2012.
