College celebrates student volunteers

Shrewsbury Colleges Group (SCG) is celebrating the impact student volunteers have on local and national communities.

With national Student Volunteering Week underway this week, SCG is celebrating student volunteers who have supported charities and their local community over the last 12 months.

SCG Student Ambassadors have launched a new virtual Friendship group to help students get to know each other. The ambassadors volunteer their time to run activities and talking group so students can meet new people and make new friends.

Public Services student Sophie Ibbotson, 17, and A Level student Sioned Hughes, 18, have both been helping raise funds for Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, the chosen student charity of the year. Sophie volunteered at a Christmas fair at Alderford Lake to raise money for the Shropshire charity and, Sioned organised a Christmas Jumper and quiz event in the college with support from the Student Union. Combined they have raised over £160 via remote donations.

Helen Knight, Development Manager at Lingen Davies, said, “We had a great time at the fair at Alderford Lake, and Sophie was amazing. Our other volunteers also called me what a lovely young lady she is. Sioned is a great ambassador for the college and has done an incredible job volunteering for such a worthy charity.”

Health & Social Care student Izzy Hathaway, 19, has been volunteering most of her life and despite the challenges faced over the last 12months, she hasn’t stopped. Izzy has regularly volunteered within her local community helping out at local playgroups, as a junior netball coach and at her church. More recently, she stepped in when her local church needed some help in their community café. Izzy is training to run 10k for the Air Ambulance and has even found time to help in college as part of her role as Health and Wellbeing Officer on the Student Union. Alongside all this, she still manages to study and work part-time in a local care home. Izzy really has made a difference in her community.
